Description
Hand-lettered memorial resolution created after the death of Dr. Benjamin Cory in 1896, and presented to his family by the Santa Clara County Medical Society. "At a meeting held February 11, 1896 the following preamble and resolutions were adopted. Whereas The stern and imperious hand of DEATH has taken from our midst our lamented friend and co-laborer Dr. Benjamin Cory and Whereas The decease of our beloved professional brother bids us pause and admire the ennobling splendor of a life work which is sanctified by an instinctive spirit of goodness: therefore, be it RESOLVED That in the life of Benjamin Cory we find much to admire, little that is wanting. His sterling abilities as a physician secured for him a pre-eminent position, and, having an enlightened and catolic mind, he was well filled to sustain or combat the theories and dogmas which arise perenially in the medical sciences. The discharge of his daily vocation was marked in manner and sentiment by a true courtesy, and he always displayed such patience, energy and fidelity as to win for himself an enviable place in the hearts of the people. As a man he was absolutely honest. His moral integrity always commanded respect and admiration, and with him devotion to truth was a passion. From his broad and noble character there gleamed every cardinal virtue that could adorn a mature manhood. Constant intercourse with his professional associates served to brighten rather than dim these glowing attributes of mind and heart which endeared him to us, and they now remain as cherished memories of an exalted human nature; be it also Resolved That we profoundly deplore the irreparable loss doctors and laymen have sustained by the death of Dr. Cory and while we bow in reverent submission to the final decree of an inexorable fate, which has transmuted the quickened spirit of our faithful friend to silence and pathetic dust, we yet desire to record this fond and trivial tribute to his worth and work; therefore, be it further Resolved That we extend to his bereaved and sorrowing family our heartfelt sympathy, and that we transmit to them an engrossed copy of this preamble and resolutions, which we desire printed in the public press."
