A Portugeuse sea captain, Joao M. Celestino, was one of many dragged into the "web of conspiracy." He had independently threatened Seward and, because of a remark, was apprehended in Philadelphia on April 18. The charges were dropped, but he remained in custody until July 8, 1865.

Provenance
Lindsey M. Gould, a Civil War veteran, acquired the photographs in the 1880s as a keepsake of his war experience. The collection remained in the Singleton family until May 2001 when the Huntington Library acquired it through a gift and purchase arrangement.
