Description
Blue can label with Greek-motif light blue border top and bottom. Features an apricot in the center, and a Spartan soldier to the left. "Spartan Brand" above and "Apricots" below. Packed by the J. C. Ainsley Packing Co., Campbell, California. John Colpitt Ainsley was born in England in 1862. He came to America at the age of 23. After spending two years in Ohio, he arrived in Campbell where he established his home. Mr. Ainsley recognized the opportunities that the growing fruit industry held. As early as 1888, with meager home-made equipment, he began to prepare canned fruits for shipment to England. In 1892, Mr. Ainsley built his large cannery on Harrison Avenue in Campbell. At season's peack over 700 persons were employed there. The bulk of the canned fruit was shipped directly to England where Ainsley's brother/partner was located. The Ainsley Company provided such amenities as a day care center for the children of employees, low cost lunches for workers, and a resident nurse. J. C. Ainsley operated his business until he sold to the Drew Canning Company in 1934. Mr. Ainsley dies in 1937.
