Description
Exterior front corner view of the Abraham and Anne Lehr Craftsman style home at 616 South Kingsley Drive, Los Angeles. The 2nd floor had 6 bedrooms and 2 baths arranged around the big, open stairwell. The dining room was at left on the first floor; behind it were a pantry, kitchen, and servants' rooms. A spacious hall receded from the front door, holding the stairs to the floor above and ending in a lovely sitting room with leaded glass windows. The living room was to the right of the hall; behind it was a library and a covered patio area. The backyard was both lawn and garden. A detached garage with rooms above was at the end of the driveway; a wooden turntable allowed cars to be positioned so they could face the street. When the property was sold, the home was torn down to make room for an office, but the new owners wisely left the front entrance area, the steps and plantings as they were. The spirit of the house was personified in the large glass bowl of lemon leaves kept on a table in the hall. Anne "Mom" Lehr was the founder of the Hollywood Guild and Canteen, a haven for servicemen during WWII.
