“Maina, the Mason, & natives digging out clay.” Group portrait of workers collecting clay from a trench. Clay, for brick making, was discovered by Ayubu Nguiai, the mission carpenter. Maina was a mason and Elder from Tumutumu who built the church and hospital at Chogoria and became a deacon in 1928. ❧ This image is from the first years of the Chogoria mission in Kenya, which was run by the Rev. Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974), from the collection entitled ‘Chogoria, 1922. The early days.”
