The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, referred to simply as "The Huntington", is an educational and research institution that was founded in 1919 by railroad and real estate developer Henry Edwards Huntington and opened to the public in 1928. Three art galleries and a library showcase magnificent collections of paintings, sculptures, rare books, manuscripts, and decorative arts. The library contains approximately 6.5 million manuscripts and more than a million rare books, which are among the most heavily used in the United States. The botanical gardens cover 120 acres and feature over 14,000 different species of plants, containing some rare plants from around the world.
