Description
This coffee pot and lid are part of a china service that belonged to John William Herndon (1823-1900) and Ann Catherine Hostetter Herndon (1836-1885). The couple was married on September 27, 1855, in San Jose, and these pieces may have been acquired by them at that time. The family first lived on Sixth Street between Empire and Jackson, and later moved to 563 N. 4th Street. John and Ann were reputedly in the same wagon train that left Missouri in April 1854 and arrived in San Jose later that year. Ann's brother was George Kirkham Hostetter, for whom Hostetter Road in San Jose is named. Her sisters were Harriet Hostetter (Mrs. Oliver W. Farnsworth) and Christiana Hostetter (Mrs. Edmund Ladd), both of whom resided in San Jose. The Herndons, Farnsworths, and Ladds are buried in connecting family plots at Oak Hill Cemetery.
