Description
One of three US Navy ships named for Fresno, California, the latest USS Fresno was the 4th ship in the Newport-class tank landing ships. Construction began on December 16, 1967 at San Diego, California, by the National Steel & Shipbuilding Company. Fresno launched on September 28, 1968, and was commissioned November 22, 1969 with Commander Stanislaus J. Sowinski in command. Fresno saw extensive service during the latter stages of the Vietnam War. Assigned to the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, and homeported at San Diego, California, Fresno alternated amphibious training operations along the west coast of the United States with regular, extended deployments to the western Pacific. Fresnowas decommissioned in 1993, and was sunk off the coast of Guam as part of a training mission in 2014. Asset Type: Program
