Description
Chopsticks such as these are typically offered with a serving dish, providing a means for guests to transfer the food to their bowls during the formal kaiseki meal. The chopsticks are usually soaked in water beforehand to prevent foods from sticking to them. The tapered design was originally intended for serving two different types of food, one from each end. However, today these chopsticks are used exclusively to serve the pickled foods (konomono course) during the kaiseki meal. Ideally chopsticks fashioned of fresh green bamboo are provided, but as this material is more difficult to come by today, serving chopsticks made from dried bamboo are often used.
