Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph article dated October 25, 1962 partially reads, "Besieged Valley market managers took a breather today to announce that many weeks of food supplies are on hand in Southern California warehouses - despite scare buying inspired by the Cuban crisis. The run on markets began Wednesday after Los Angeles' civil defense director, Joseph Quinn, urged residents to stock a two-weeks supply of food. It was expected to continue today. Crowds of women with their market baskets overflowing with canned goods, powdered milk and bottled water, started collecting at Valley markets at about 11 a.m. and kept pouring in all day. All of them had heard or were told about Quinn's statement that all retail outlets will be closed immediately for five days in case of a shooting war in order to set up rationing."
