Description
Note: In Pose (12.2000 PJ). (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: In pose (12.2000 PJ). - Chamberlains as hunters. For the noble gentlemen of the court, days spent hunting provide the greatest pleasure. Hunting starts in December and goes on till March. When the dry season starts the Africans set fire to the endless sea of high, dried-out grass which serves as a hiding place for many animals. The animals naturally try to save themselves from the fire, but rush straight into the arms of another danger - because the grass is not burned down at random, but in such a way that there is only one route of escape and that is where the hunters stand, armed with poisoned arrows, and spears. They kill the fleeing animals in great droves. The meat is partly eaten fresh, and partly smoked over the open fire, till it looks nasty, and amounts to black lumps as hard as stone, which need the good teeth of our Africans if they are to be bitten into. (A. Wuhrmann 1917, "Commentaries on slides from Bamum", K 366). - Peter Valentin notes that bows and arrows are rare in Bamum, so the bow and the quiver are probably Hausa or Fulani work. Note the elaborate "beaked" sandal. Hausa and Fulani arrows are mostly poisoned (strophantus). (PV 02.2002).
