Photograph article dated November 1, 1962 partially reads, "Autumn comes to New England in sudden flame of red, yellow and orange with a tinge of brown soon in September when nights become crisp and days mellow. I remember the smell of mid-morning sun warming fallen leaves after a night of near frost. The damp, musty wood smell of padded leaves after soft-fall rain. The quietness of falling leaves on a still afternoon and the noise of scuffling through them. The pleasure - it never was work - of raking leaves and then, because it had to be done, of jumping into them and kicking them all about again... I decided, then, to find autumn leaves. I would leave the Valley's perpetual greenness, except where the heat and sun had dried and killed, and go up into the mountains. I was a wayward Maine-iac and I was homesick for an autumn."
