Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. Skating star Sonja Henie and then-boyfriend, actor Tyrone Power, take in the fights. One of the first female superstar athletes, Henie won Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936 before she retired to concentrate on films and her ice show. The frozen pond equivalent of Esther Williams, she starred in such films as "Thin Ice," "Happy Landing," and "Iceland." In the early 1950s, Henie was instrumental in popularizing the Zamboni machine, an innovative (and time-saving) ice-resurfacing machine invented and manufactured by Frank Zamboni at his Iceland rink in Paramount. Photograph dated May 29, 1937.
