Rosalind (Roz) Wiener Wyman (1930-) was the youngest person (and only the second woman) ever elected to the Los Angeles City Council. She became politically active in college and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1953 at the age of 22. In 1954 she married attorney Eugene Wyman, a fellow Democratic activist and entertainment attorney. While on the city council, Wyman was the first female acting mayor, and she played a pivotal role in bringing the Dodgers baseball team from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1957. Controversies over that arrangement contributed to Wyman's defeat for a fourth term in 1965. After leaving office Wyman continued her involvement in political and civic affairs. During the 1974 congressional campaigns, she became the first woman to head a major party's fund-raising efforts. She served as Convention Chair and chief executive officer of the 1984 Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, the first woman of either major Party to wield the gavel at a presidential nominating convention. Wyman has been a delegate to every Democratic National Convention since 1952 (except one), last attending the historic 2008 Convention which nominated Barack Obama. Wyman's national appointments include the UNESCO Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. She has been a leader of the Los Angeles Jewish community, has received many Jewish community awards and national awards, chaired fund-raising events, and served on the board of American Friends of the Hebrew University.; In 1955, actress Jane Russell founded the World Adoption International Fund, sometimes locally referred to as the Women's Adoption International Fund. WAIF was a volunteer organization designed to help facilitate overseas adoptions by American couples. Russell adopted three children with husband Bob Waterfield and her career was nearly ended because of one of the adoptions.
