Description
Photograph of a view of about fifty mummies standing along the sides of a sunny corridor awaiting burial, ca.1905. A long corridor runs from the foreground to the background at center and dried mummies can be seen leaning against the stone walls on left and right. When the poor of Mexico were unable to pay the fees for burial, the bodies were kept as shown for a fixed period of time and marked for identification. The dryness of the air prevented decay. If the fee was not paid within the necessary time, the bodies were finally buried promiscuously.
