Description
This chawan for thin tea is decorated with vigorous white brushwork over a warm-toned glaze. The brushed pattern is known as hakeme, which originated in Korean pottery kilns. It was probably introduced to Japan through the acquisition of imported wares and by Japanese feudal lords' patronage of immigrant Korean potters. Created by Matsubayashi Hosai, the 14th generation master in the Asahi lineage, this piece originates from the Asahi kamamoto kiln. One of seven kilns favored by tea master Kobori Enshu (1579-1647), the Asahi kilns were established c. 1600. Asahi ware (Asahi-yaki)
