Description
Charles S. Howard, California sportsman, introduced a couple of real turf champions to each other December 5, 1939, at the "press preview" staged at Santa Anita. At left is Seabiscuit, the "pet" of the Howard barns, and at right is Kayak II, the fleet Argentine horse who captured the last $100,000 Santa Anita Handicap for Howard. Kayak II had just returned from an eastern campaign, while Seabiscuit had returned after a retirement of eight months on the Howard ranch to seek a comeback on the turf. Both were to be nominated for the $100,000 classic. Millionaire auto dealer and race horse owner Howard passed away in 1950.
