This is an audio recording of a series of panelists speaking about what will make executives effective in the 1990s. In this part we hear from Gale Merseth, Mort Meyerson, and Bill Pollard. Merseth focuses his talk on the changes and forces that will affect the business world and the roles he believes will characterize effective executives. He believes in a “TEAM” approach, in which one strives to contribute as a Teacher, Environmentalist, Activist, and Mediator. Meyerson believes that what will be most important for executives in the 1990s is doing what should have been done, but was not, in the 1970s and 1980s. He also says there will have to be a restructuring of the restructured organization, and that the best thing executives can do is provide an environment that allows others to succeed. Pollard approaches the topic from a different perspective, in which his employees are not knowledge workers, and a struggle during training is often illiteracy. He believes the three most import characteristics to have in an executive are “a servant’s heart”, a thirst for learning, and an action oriented mindset. He feels that justice, mercy and determination should be used in running a business.
