Description: 1959 photograph of California 62nd District Assemblyman Augustus Hawkins, Los Angeles. Hawkins served as Assemblyman of the 62nd District from 1934 to 1962. In 1962, Hawkins became the first African-American Congressperson west of the Mississippi. Also included are two newspaper clippings mentioning Hawkins, "Assembly hits race violence" (21 March 1952) and "[Ilg.] urged to fight prejudices" (18 February 1958).
