Presidential candidate of the National Unity Front, Ángel Aníbal Guevara speaks to a crowd of people at a campaign rally in March 1982. Seated beside Guevara is his vice president and running mate Ramiro Ponce Monroy. Many in the crowd are holding up banners and posters that support the candidates. On March 8, 1982 he won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt. El candidato presidencial del Frente de Unidad Nacional, Ángel Aníbal Guevara habla ante una multitud de personas en un mitin de campaña en marzo de 1982. Sentado junto a Guevara está su vicepresidente y compañero de fórmula Ramiro Ponce Monroy. Muchos entre la multitud sostienen banderas y pósters apoyando a los candidatos. El 8 de marzo de 1982, Guevara ganó las elecciones presidenciales aunque otros partidos reclamaron fraude electoral. Un golpe de estado militar impidió que Guevara asumiera el poder e instaló una junta de tres hombres encabezada por el general Efraín Ríos Montt.
