Description
This photograph of the storefront of Leed’s women’s shoes at 814 K Street was taken on the business’s opening day, September 15, 1934. Neon signage and large showcases are visible. The location, designed to store up to 12,000 pairs of women’s shoes at any given time, was an attempt by the nationwide organization to breach the Pacific Coast market. In addition to shoes, the store also offered options in hosiery and bags. The façade of the store was made from Italian Verdi marble with the entrance done in white Italian marble. Upon opening, West Coast executive of the company, Joe Arenson, felt that the city of Sacramento was “one of the most progressive in the nation.” 30 people were employed at the time the store was opened. Leed’s held a presence in the Sacramento area well into the 1970s with locations in downtown Sacramento, the Country Club Centre, and Southgate Shopping Center.
