This interview was conducted as part of the North San Rafael History Project: From Ranches to Ranch Houses: The Growth of San Rafael's Miller Creek & Las Gallinas Valleys, a collaboration of citizens in North San Rafael and the Anne T. Kent California Room, Marin County Free Library. Interviews were conducted with North San Rafael leaders & pioneers to document the history of the area since World War II, including citizen involvement to protect the quality of life and preserve the unique character and natural assets of the area. A lifetime Marin resident and descendent of San Rafael pioneer Hyman Smith, Mike Smith recalls his family's history and recounts his dairy farm upbringing. He remembers the people and activities involved in the Smith real estate holdings and the changes through the years from farming to resident and commercial development. Mike reflects on his time with the San Rafael Planning Commission and shares his thoughts on land development and growth issues in Marin.
