Description
The Gedigē is a square, tall, brick edifice with projecting bays, which had an upper story with a vaulted brick superstructure, possibly with a tiled roof, and a circumambulatory path. It is a rare edifice. Several door and window frames have been preserved. The first few steps of its stairway are to be seen on the western side. An earlier building of the same design, but in an inferior state of preservation, is nearby. This edifice and the nearby relic house may have housed Mahāyana or Theravāda texts. The Archaeological Department has recently proposed that the Gedige was the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic. Interior with circumambulatory path.
