Description
Title supplied by cataloger. A Continental Airlines DC-10, departing Los Angeles for Honolulu, experienced tire failure of the left main landing gear during take-off, leading the captain to reject the take-off. Once it was determined that the aircraft could not stop on the runway, it was was steered to the right and departed the right corner of the runway end. About 100 feet beyond that, the left main gear failed, causing a fire to erupt. Two of Flight 603's 200 occupants were killed in the accident. Photograph caption dated March 1, 1978 reads, "Continental Flight 603 bound for Hawaii crashed during take-off at Los Angeles International Airport today."
