Thought for the day by Charles Handy on the consequences of diversity for America and Europe, namely separateness, and how uniting can restore faith in society and God. Handy begins the thought discussing the tower of Babel in the story of Genesis, and how it should serve as a warning to people not to get too arrogant and satisfied in life and also strive to speak with one voice to resolve the world's problems. He proceeds to discuss a diversity speech he prepared to give in America based upon the tower of Babel, and how differences should be a delight and not a burden for all societies because the strongest societies are the most diverse. However, he cautions that differences can turn into separateness if a diverse people lack a common voice, and that the pursuit of individualism and tribalism in the modern age has brought both America and England close to separateness.
