Charles Ellis is founder of Greenwich Associates, a strategy consulting firm focused on financial institutions. In this interview, Ellis discusses his experiences with Peter Drucker and the consulting work he did for Greenwich Associates over a ten-year span. He relates how Drucker encouraged them to think in a way that he refers to as “liberalism of thinking.” Ellis also maintains that Drucker often seemed more like a philosopher than a management consultant. Towards the middle of the interview, Ellis explains how Drucker encouraged them to think globally and not limit their business geographically. He also relates how during a consulting meeting at Drucker’s home, Drucker decided they needed to take a break and suggested that they all go for a swim in his backyard pool. Ellis explains how this story serves as an example of the blending of Drucker’s informality and his, “august statements of great magnitude.” He goes on to give a brief discussion of Drucker’s time with General Motors and the importance of his work there.
