Photograph caption dated August 26, 1986 reads, "Paramedics picket outside Los Angeles City Hall East to protest what they say are unsafe working conditions and the way that they are treated. Inside, negotiators for the city and paramedics met yesterday for the first time in three weeks to discuss a contract. "We're the fire department's adopted children," charged Roger Berger of the United Paramedics of Los Angeles. "We (crews) sometimes take 700 calls a month. The safe maximum is 350." But Battalion Chief Dean Cathey said that firefighters also respond to the same calls and they aren't complaining. Neither side discussed wage issues."
