“Chogoria’s 30 out-schools require 80-90 teachers. They attended a refresher course in August 1949.” Group portrait of the mission teaching staff. The mission to the Chuka-Mwimbi had started in 1916 with three schools run by indigenous teachers by the early part of the 1950’s school provision was being expanded by the state through working with the Christian churches. ❧ The image is from the collection of Dr Archibald Clive Irvine (1893-1974) showing the period from 1947-1961 at the Chogoria mission which was established near Mt Kenya, in 1922, and run by Dr Irvine.
