Description
Pictured on March 31, 1947, are the Esquire Theater and Stanley T. Lovett Jewelers at 1219 and 1217 K St., respectively. Designed by noted theater architect William B. David of San Francisco, the Esquire opened at 5 p.m. on March 14, 1940, for the premiere of “The Amazing Mr. Williams,” starring Melvyn Douglas and Joan Blondell. The $200,000 Moderne-style venue was built as part of Joseph Blumenfeld’s Theater Circuit, which included Sacramento’s Sierra, Tower and Del Paso theaters. The Esquire prided itself on its stadium-style configuration, offering an unobstructed view of the screen from every seat and being able to recirculate the building’s air every 10 minutes. The Canadian-born Lovett opened his jewelry store in 1938 at 1022 K St., later moving to the Esquire Theater building, only to open another store in Town and Country Village. He retired to a Nevada ranch in 1953, where he raised cattle until his death in 1960.
