Title supplied by cataloger. Julia Morgan designed the Mission-Revival style Herald-Examiner Building, at 1111 South Broadway, which opened in 1914. In 1962, the morning Examiner (founded in 1903) merged with the evening Herald Express (founded approximately 1871) creating the Herald-Examiner newspaper. The building was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #178 in 1977, but closed in 1989 and has been empty ever since. Writing on verso reads, "Dad was Director of Public Information for Western Regional Army & Navy District (11th). This was a caravan of recreational and athletic equipment collected for distribution to military installations in west and Pacific--baseball stuff, pianos, etc. It (the caravan) went around L.A. to all the newspaper offices to show them what their support in publicity had resulted in. Dad directed the campaign for the drive and received many, many letters from Army posts thanking him for his keep in the drive."
