Description
This 1962 view of Merchant Street, between Seventh and Eighth Streets, shows the "Family Entrance" to Boitano's Restaurant and Bar at 712 J Street. To the left is the Crocker-Anglo National Bank at 700 J Streets. Beside it is Miro's Barber Shop at 707 Merchant Street. At the extreme left is the Merchants National Bank at 1015 Seventh Street. Founded in 1921 by H.H. Robinson, it was by the 1970s that the branchless bank was in the top 10 percent of American banks for assets held. With redevelopment firmly established, in the late 1960s, it was the intent of the section's businesses to make Merchant akin to San Francisco's pedestrian-only Maiden Lane. By this time, the Post Office and Federal Building, at 701 K Street, had been razed to make room for a public plaza. It, and the Ochsner Building, were thought to be instrumental in making the district work. The plan never came fruition.
