Description
Image of two eye-level side views of two passenger trains of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway depicted in 1831: the top panel contains a steam locomotive labeled "Jupiter" with a 2-2-0 wheel arrangement, tender, and set of enclosed passenger cars filled with travelers and luggage with a rocky landscape in the background; the lower panel contains a steam locomotive labeled "North Star" with a 2-2-0 wheel arrangement, tender with water barrel, and set of open passenger cars filled with passengers, with a green countryside in the background.
Probable date based on item text. "Plate, I.A Train of the First Class of Carriages with the Mail. -- Plate, II. (below) A train of the Second Class for outside Passengers. --with three Third Class Carriages behind."--text, top center margin. "Copyrighted by MB Cotsworth, Holgate, York."--text, bottom right margin. "Printed & Published 1894 by Raphael Tuck & Sons, London, Paris, & New York. Publishers to her Majesty."--text, bottom center margin. "'North Star' built 1830 by R, Stephenson & Co, 11" Cylinders, 16" Stroke, 5ft. Driving wheel / 'Jupiter' " 1831 " " 11" " 16 " 5ft. " "--text, bottom left margin. "N.B. the First and Second Class Carriages were constructed after the style of three Stage Coach bodies combined to form one Carriage ... G, Leeman Esq, M.P. Chairman of N E Rly. speaking as Chairman of the 1st. Railway Jubilee (Stockton & Darlington) held at Darlington 27th. Sept. 1875 said --"I know nothing comparable in the History of Science to that grand triumphal march - for such it was - with which the Liverpool & Manchester Railway was opened."--text, bottom center margin.
