Description
A group of ten young women and girls gather to model their English fashions for The Young Ladies' Journal of February 1888. Six of the models display coats, hats, and outerwear to brave the winter cold, while four of the models are dressed for the indoors. The first and youngest girl on the left wears a dress with a plaid bodice and pleated skirt; a twisted cord with tassels serves as a belt. Her short gray coat has wide black velvet lapels and cuffs, and she wears a matching black velvet hat accented with a white ostrich feather. She wears black stockings, black shoes, and white gloves; her hair is worn long. Standing next to her is a young woman dressed in a long green coat with black diagonal lines. The cuffs, collar, and the single diagonal lapel are accented with black scroll patterned embroidery. Two hip pockets have wide flaps. Her coat is above ankle length, and full at the back to accommodate the bustles of the day. To complete the outfit she wears black and green heeled boots, yellow gloves, and carries a furled umbrella. Her hair is dressed in a fall at the back, and she wears a black hat with green edging and two large pink bows. Third from the left is a young woman standing in profile, showing her fashionable bustled silhouette. Her coat or mantel is gray plaid and has a pink-lined hood. With the outfit she wears black boots, tan gloves, and a black hat with an upturned brim at the back. The hat is trimmed with a buckle, pink ribbon and bow, and a pink ostrich feather; her hair is swept up. Fourth from the left is a younger girl in a sapphire blue velvet coat with striped details. The coat has a turquoise and black vertically striped panel in front coming to a v at the dropped waist, and expanding into another v to the hem. An ornate clasp or applique acts as a closure at the front of the dropped waist. The cuffs and buttoned yoke are of the blue and black stripes, and she wears blue stockings and black boots. Her flat brimmed straw hat is trimmed with a small white bird and blue satin; her hair is worn long. Holding her hand is a young girl who also wears blue and black. Her short black coat has wide notched lapels and the drop-waist of her coat is cinched with a wide belt with a rectangular gold buckle. She wears blue stockings, black boots, gloves, and a black hat trimmed with a bow and ostrich feather; her hair is worn in long curls. The next young lady is dressed to go outdoors, She wears a rust brown just below knee length coat trimmed with bands of gold fur on the center front, hem and cuffs. Her brown dress falls just below the knee and has several rows of fringe on a diagonal. A fur-trimmed hat matches her coat; the top drapes over to the side. She wears yellow gloves, black boots, and orange stockings. She stands next to two young ladies with ankle length dresses who are reading a book together. The first young lady wears a white high necked blouse and a pale pink and dark rose velvet outfit. The bodice has pink center front section, ending in a point below the waist, with dark rose velvet side sections. The peplum and sleeves are of pink with a pattern of dark dots suggested on the sleeves. The sleeves are full at the shoulders, and have deep velvet cuffs. The skirt has two layers: the under layer is pink with a wide dark rose velvet band at the hem. The over layer is pink with the pattern, and is drawn across the front in a graceful sweep. Two ends of a dark velvet sash with tassels hang from the waist. She wears tan gloves and black boots. The next young lady wears a gray satin dress with a brown and gold vertically striped underskirt. The sleeves and collar of the dress match the under skirt. The gray bodice in snugly fitted, with the bodice forming a point at the center front of the waist. The lapel on the right continues downward as part of the overskirt, which drapes to the side to reveal the underskirt. Because of the angle, it is not clear whether the front forms an apron style drape at the front, allowing both sides to reveal the underskirt, or if the dress is asymmetrical, with the back gray satin section covering the rest of the underskirt. She also wears tan gloves, black boots, and drop earrings. Both young ladies have their hair dressed in curls falling at the back, and have curled bangs. The last two younger girls at the right wear hems just below the knee. The girl second from the right wears a dark green coat with the front and hem trimmed with black lace. Her yellow dress has a high neck and vertical pleats the length of the dress. Her outfit shows the fashionable bustle silhouette. The girl wears green striped stockings and black boots. The young girl on the far right wears a blue and black plaid skirt and jacket over a pink satin blouse. The jacket is tight fitting and has wide velvet lapels. The short skirt is pleated and has a velvet hem. She wears red stockings, short black boots, gloves, and a blue hair bow on her curly blond hair. She holds a toy harlequin puppet.
