Description
Photograph of "The August Moon" a painting by Cecil Lawson depicting swampland, [s.d.]. Trees frame the image to either side, their trunks evident in the extreme foreground. The rightmost tree bends slightly to the left, while the tree at the left forks into two trunks. Leftover stumps and logs from a fallen tree are visible on the slop just behind these two trees, which leads to the drained marsh below. Cattle are visible grazing here, with more trees interspersed among them. Dense foliage fills the rest of the image to the horizon. The back of the photoprint reads "The golden moon rising over the English landscape before the day light has quite disappeared. Fir trees -- cattle then [?] Sussex Downs -- in distance". Picture file card reads "The aim of the painter has been to produce the effect of the golden moon rising over and English landscape before the daylight has quite disappeared".
