Description
Bust-length portrait. Signed by photographer. 2013-1688. George Hugo Malter was born in Silesia, Prussia in 1852. Emigrated to the United States, settling in San Francisco in 1868 or 1869. Was a mining engineer, organized the firm of Malter, Lind & Co., contractors and builders of heavy mills and mining machinery, president of Aetna Iron Works (1884-85). In 1879 began purchasing land in the Fresno area. Founded the St. George Vineyard, growing grapes for the table, for raisins, for wine and brandy. In 1906 (after earthquake and fire) moved permanently to Fresno home at Maltermoro (now Sunnyside), from San Francisco. He died in 1928.
