Photograph caption dated May 18, 1955 reads, "Mr. and Mrs. H. David Kroll receive citation and Navy and Marine Corps medal from Capt. F. R. Bunker, commander of Naval Reserve Armory in Chávez Ravine, and Lieut. Comdr. W. F. Jolley (right). Awards were made posthumously to the Krolls for their son, Lieut. (jg) Robert L. Kroll, for heroic conduct when his ship foundered in the Atlantic Ocean on Sept. 13, 1944."
