This is a photograph of Frs. Jacques, Leo Davis and John O'Donnell upon their departure from Erbadan. "The new pastor is happy and the ex-pastor weeps. Three hours ride to station [six miles] on account of the mud." Two of the fathers are on a cart with large wheels and the one in the middle is seeing the other two off. Born in Ontario, Canada, Fr. Jacques came to Maryknoll in 1924 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1927. That same year he began his almost forty year mission work in Fushun, Manchuria. In 1948 he was assigned to Kweilin where he worked until he was expelled to Hong Kong in 1950. He spent many years in Taiwan. -- Born in Pennsylvania, Fr. Davis came to Maryknoll in 1917 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1926. He departed for Fushun, Manchuria that same year. He worked there until 1932 when a tumor forced a leg amputation and his early return to the United States. He was affectionately known as "Pop". His assignments included Spiritual Director, Vice- Rector, Professor of Moral Theology, Professor of Canon Law, Librarian, Archivist, and delegate to the Fourth General Chapter to the Society. -- Rev. O'Donnell was born in New York City. He entered Maryknoll in 1922 and was ordained in 1929. He was assigned to Fushun, Manchuria where he remained until granted a furlough in 1937, after which he returned to Fushun. He was interned when war with Japan broke out and in 1942 was repatriated aboard the refugee ship Gripsholm.
