Description
Packing crate label for German Prunes, J.M. Dawson Company, San Jose, California. Dr. James M. Dawson, his wife Eloise Jones Dawson, and their son Thomas Benton Dawson started the first successful fruit canning operation behind their house in San Jose in 1872. They operated as J.M. Dawson Company from 1873 until incorporating as the San Jose Fruit Packing Company in 1875. Dr. Dawson left SJFPC in 1878 and restarted the J.M. Dawson Company, which he ran until his death in 1885.
