Description
Caption from August 21, 1974 Sacramento Bee reads "A World War II-vintage B-17 descended into a Lassen County cow pasture, when the converted bomber, which was flying on three engines at the time, had additional mechanical trouble. Pilot Ray Reagan was flying the plane to California from Boise, Idaho, for aerial firefighting duty when he was forced down on the Swickard 5 Dot Ranch just off Highway 139 five miles east of Eagle Lake. Reagan, who was uninjured when the plane tore out a telephone line and two fences, blamed the forced landing on a fuel line problem. Owners of the plane, Aero Union Corp. of Chico, today were installing a fourth engine because the plane was unable to lift off the makeshift runway on only three engines. Mechanics, below, check the plane for damage. Reagan hopes to have the plane back in the air by tonight."
