Among the two score ranchos and luxurious estates destroyed was the old J. R. Giddings rancho, one of the original ranch houses of the district and full of historic associations of the Los Angeles back country. Giddings is shown, at right, with his ranch foreman, Oscar Farrell, looking over the charred ruins of his home. Many famous estates of the wealthy were left in ashes in the wake of the swiftly moving wall of flames. Photo dated: October 23, 1935.
