Description
When we tackle important social problems, how do we know what will work? This question is central for government agencies, NGOs, business leaders, philanthropists, and universities. This panel opens a daylong workshop entitled "What Works?" Claremont Graduate University President Dr. Robert Klitgaard introduces the topic of the day by discussing how evaluators, policy makers, and foundations can know that efforts to address social problems are effective. M. Christine DeVita, as chair of the first panel, guides discussion with a group of four guests with different perspectives on the question. Joe Coulombe describes the value of focusing on a specific demographic when beginning a major project, using his own history as the founder of Trader Joe's Market as an example. Denise Shephard describes the challenges inherent in addressing major social issues from a program-planning standpoint. Finally, Dr. Sandra J. Stein and Dr. Eugene E. Garcia describe their own experiences creating social intervention programs.
