Description
“Deacon ‘Neduonipied’ and his wife ‘Womath’ at the graves of their children. They have lost all their children, eight in number. Croton plants in the background.” Exterior view showing a man and his wife (with a horse behind them) by the graves of their children, surrounded by vegetation. Croton is a tree or shrub native to Southeast Asia. Croton oil, used in herbal medicine as a violent purgative, is extracted from its seeds. In Scots language, the title deacon is also used for a head-workman, a master or chairman of a trade guild, or one who is adept, expert and proficient.
