Photograph caption dated February 8, 1963 reads, "When lanky, 6-foot-3 cowboy Simms Reddin, inbound on the Ventura Freeway with a load of cattle Wednesday, felt his load shift, he stopped. Everything seemed to be all right. But when he started up again, the four cattle lunged against the tailboard, broke it and made a frantic dash to freedom in the midst of freeway traffic. The result: one cow killed, two motorists injured and a rodeo of sorts which lasted three hours and ended in the capture of three of the cattle. Redden, 24, Ventura, left above, roped one steer and Police Sgt. Joe Barton and a passing veterinarian, Dr. W. V. Bakan, right above, tied up another. A car driven by Walter J. Hemple, 48, 14501 Sayre St., San Fernando, swerved and missed cow number 3, but a second car, driven by D. E. Kenna, 20, 6733 Sepulveda Blvd., Van Nuys, collided with Hemple's car. Both men were hospitalized with minor injuries. The fourth steer died of unknown causes."
