Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. This recording is the Loma Prieta Oral History of Fritz Hoffman, who was an Assistant Bridge Engineer in Sacramento. In this recording, Hoffman describes how he was driving his car in Sacramento and learned of the earthquake, and saw the damage on the television later that night. The next day, he went to his office in Sacramento and volunteered to go to the Bay Area to study the earthquake damage. Hoffman spent most of his time at the Cypress Structure, where he observed how the contractors worked, and helped map cars on the structure for the fire department for recovery efforts. He describes several recovery efforts he observed the fire department conduct at the Cypress Structure. This recording is important because it captures the first-person experience of what it was like to be at the Cypress Structure after the Loma Prieta Earthquake and what efforts it took to recover the deceased at the structure.
