Photograph shows Drilling of grout holes-- This machine set up in an inspection gallery inside the base of Friant Dam is drilling a hole (one of hundreds) deep into the bedrock below the dam, preparatory to final high-pressure grouting of the foundation rock. Grout, which is a slurry of cement and water, is forced into thee holes and thereby into tiny seams or cracks which always exist in seemingly solid rock, effectively sealing them against percoltion.
