Description
A young man and a boy in a Maasai village in Northern Tanzania stand outdoors while holding on to a round object. Maasai males are groomed to become warriors to protect their villages. As boys approach their teenage years, they undergo traditional age-set rites and rituals to prepare them to become warriors and husbands. Upon completion of tribal rites and reaching a certain maturity, the Maasai male eventually becomes an elder in the village. In 1979, Richard Cross was invited to photograph the Maasai people as part of an ethnographic film project by then doctoral student Peter Biella. Cross received the invitation while doing graduate work at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in Tanzania, Cross photographed the cultural traditions, tribal rituals and daily life of the Maasai people.
