Description
A Mayan girl cooks in the refugee camp in La Sombra, Chiapas. Refugees in the camps had no resources to deal with illness such as tubercolosis, dengue, malaria or malnutrition. Guatemala paramilitary bands attacked the refugees camp of La Sombra (and the one of Santiago el Vértice) on January 25 and 26, 1983, killing at least four people and kidnapping one. The Guatemalan government alleged that the refugee camp was a guerrillas center but the vast majority of the refugees living in the camp were women, children or old and infirm Guatemalans.
