Description
Biography/History: Marlene Mendoza was born and raised in El Salvador. She come to the United States in 1985 when she was eighteen years old. In 1990, she was hired as a cocktail server at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), where she got involved with HERE Local 814 during a fight to save her job and the benefits that she relied on to provide health care for her disabled son. She has been a food service worker for over twenty-five years and has helped organize the union in various ways during that time. At the time of the interview, she was serving on the executive board of UNITE HERE Local 11.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Early experiences in the United States after immigrating from El Salvador — Work in the fast food industry — Work as a cocktail server at LAX in 1990s and the impact of union membership — Leadership of Local 814 in the early 1990s — 1995 LAX Master Plan’s threat to her job and benefits — Single motherhood and raising a disabled child while becoming a union leader — House visits and developing other leaders within the local — Challenges to Local 814’s leadership and trusteeship — Mentorship of María Elena Durazo, Kurt Peterson, Tom Walsh, and Noel Rodriguez — Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) and Service Employees International Union fight for worker retention laws, a living wage ordinance, and to elect politicians who would better represent working people — Strong leadership in the union.
