Description
"A Man of the Sandwich Islands with his Helmet." Lithograph portrait produced by John Meares crew member of Captain James Cook's ship, The Discovery. This lithograph replica depicts high chief Ka'iana of O'ahu, Hawai'i. Ka'iana is wearing a feathered mahiole (helmet) and an 'ahu'ula (cloak). Both the mahiole and 'ahu'ula were embellished with feathers collected from the Scarlet Hawaiian Honeycreeper, known in Hawai'i as the 'i'iwi (dark feathers) and the Moho Nobilis, known in Hawai'i as the 'ō'ō (light feathers). Ka'iana ruled in O'ahu until his death in 1795. Henry Azbill--Maidu--Chico MSS 160:7:13 Photo notes: Kaiana -- great, grandfather of Mary Azbil (Henry's mother)
