Fire break on the west horn of Saddle Peak in the Santa Monica Mountains on January 31, 1937, seen from the end of Saddle Peak Road, off Topanga Canyon above Fernwood. Fire breaks are of little value, except for avenues along which fire fighters can move and for backfiring purposes. But they are of no value in stopping a major conflagration.
